How to Read Your Tire Size Before Calling a Tire Shop in West Palm Beach

Calling a tire shop is faster when you have the tire size in front of you. A common passenger tire size might look like 225/65R17. Those numbers and letters describe the tire dimensions and construction, but they are not the only specifications that matter when choosing a replacement. Deals On Wheels & Tires provides new tire sales and installation in West Palm Beach for cars, SUVs and light-duty pickups.

For a complete pre-purchase checklist covering tire size, two-versus-four replacement, puncture repair, alignment and what is included with a four-tire purchase, see our New Tire Buyer Guide for West Palm Beach drivers.

What 225/65R17 means

  • 225 is the nominal tire width in millimeters.
  • 65 is the aspect ratio: the sidewall height is expressed as a percentage of the tire width.
  • R indicates radial construction.
  • 17 is the wheel diameter in inches.

After the basic size you may also see a load index and speed rating, such as 102H. Those specifications matter too. A replacement tire should meet the requirements for the vehicle rather than being chosen from the size numbers alone.

Where to find the correct tire information

The tire sidewall tells you what is currently installed. The driver-door placard typically lists the manufacturer’s recommended tire size and inflation pressures for the vehicle. The owner’s manual can provide additional information. If the vehicle has aftermarket wheels or a non-stock tire size, mention that when calling.

Why you should not substitute sizes at random

Changing overall tire diameter can affect speedometer readings, clearance, handling and electronic vehicle systems. Load capacity and wheel fit also matter. If you are considering a different size, the combination should be checked for the specific vehicle and wheel rather than guessed.

Tell the tire shop about wear symptoms too

If the old tire is worn on one edge, cupped, feathered or repeatedly losing air, mention it. A new tire may be only part of the solution. Uneven wear can be related to inflation, wheel alignment or worn steering/suspension parts. We provide Hunter wheel alignment and in-shop auto repair when those issues need to be inspected.

What if the tire has a nail or puncture?

Do not assume every puncture requires a new tire, and do not assume every puncture is safely repairable. Location and extent of the damage, tire condition and other factors matter. Our tire repair service can inspect the tire and determine whether repair or replacement is appropriate.
